about
Time travel. The pitcher in the opening line comes from watching live baseball one night in a 24 hour bar on Queen Street, Auckland, the rest is a scatter-gun collage of places and memories both personal (the notice board full of photographs in the kitchen) and mythic (Laurel Canyon, Dogtown, Disneyland). This track was scheduled to be the first single from the album. Jonathon King shot a video for this (with original Trains’ bass player Nick Kreisler standing in for Tony Lumsden) at my (then) home in Western Springs. After Lost folded, Murray Cammick became interested in picking the song up for his Felix Records label and even had it remixed. While he got the song onto the (radio programmers’) Kiwi Hit Disc in 1997, it was never officially released. I love Andrew’s guitar break in this – he really hits it out of the park!
lyrics
I was following the pitcher,
some faces just come out of the dark and man they hit ya!
Real life or is it art?
I was standing in the kitchen,
staring at photographs and my fingers started twitchin’,
just like a polygraph.
Think I’ll take my time again…
It was 1977.
We were in California and we weren’t fishing,
just busy making sons and daughters.
Think I’ll take my time again…
California fishing (California),
California fishing (California),
Cal-I-forn-I-A.
Think I’ll take my time again…
